Could 2013 mark the beginning of the end? No doubt there’s a scenario in which Facebook manages to annoy enough of the planet that its billion-strong number — remember, that’s activeusers Facebook is counting — starts to slip.
But the number is so large to begin with, it would take a truly heroic amount of breaking things to shift it. You think the millions joining the service in the developing world have heard of Promoted Posts? You think they care if the News Feed has one column or two?
Will the second billion sign on in 2013? It’s unlikely, but not ridiculously preposterous. In that 2011 prediction of Albert Babayev’s, the poor guy got one other thing wrong: He predicted Facebook wouldn’t break a billion users until 2014.
